Big Ben
Built between 1858 and 1859, the Clock Tower of the Palace of Westminster is one of London’s most famous landmarks, commonly known as Big Ben. Big Ben is often generally used to describe the tower, the clock and the bell, but was initially used to refer to the biggest of five bells. In 2012 the tower was renamed as Elizabeth Tower in tribute to Queen Elizabeth II in her Diamond Jubilee Year. At over 150 years old and standing tall at 316 ft., Big Ben has watched over thousands of Londoners and visitors. Chief architect Charles Barry built Big Ben as part of the Westminster Palace after a fire burnt down a significant part of the old palace.
Unfortunately, due to security reasons the 75 minute tour of Big Ben and its 334 stone steps is only open to UK visitors who require advance permission from their MP for the visit.
Big Ben is so popular that he has his own unofficial Twitter account, ‘bonging’ away for his 100,000 plus followers.
Once in Westminster, make sure you catch some live ‘bonging’ from iconic Big Ben himself.
