Tower Bridge Exhibition

Posted on Monday, November 11th, 2013 - Category Uncategorized

Built in the 18th century, Tower Bridge is a bascule and suspension bridge over the River Thames, constructed to assist a crowded East London. Its Gothic Victorian look, despite being initially disliked, gradually elevated the tower to an iconic status. Its vintage mechanics are intriguing aspects that continue to bring visitors to the bridge, and it finds itself in many tourist snapshots.

The bridge has a majestic length of 800 ft. with its elaborate tonnes of steel, brick, concrete and centuries of strength withstanding years of rain, snow and heat. Another testament to man’s intellectual capabilities.

The bridge was originally a mid-greenish blue colour but was recoated to red, white and blue in 1977 to celebrate Queen Elizabeth II’s Silver Jubilee.

Two heavy bascules were designed by the engineer Sir John Wolfe Barry to manoeuvre river traffic and allow the passage of large vessels such as ships with large masts that were frequent in the 19th Century. The bascules used to open around fifty times a day, but this now only totals up to a thousand times a year. Viewing times for this can be found on the Bridge’s website. Inside, the Tower Bridge Exhibition allows you to learn about the Bridge’s history, tour the vintage engine room and other forms of media to find out more about the Bridge.

The best part of the tour is the splendid view from the walkway between the two towers of the bridge.
