Trafalgar Square

Trafalgar Square is the crux of the city of Westminster. George Ledwell Taylor, late architect and the person responsible for the name “Trafalgar Square” – a public space and tourist attraction in central London; engaged John Nash to redevelop the borough of the city of Westminster. The current architecture is by 18th Century architect, Sir Charles Barry, who is famous for his renowned works such as Big Ben. The centre of the square has a monument guarded by lion statues on all four sides called the Nelson Column to commemorate Admiral Horatio Nelson who died at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805, hence bringing about the name “Trafalgar Square”.

The square is used for community gatherings during New Year’s Eve and for public demonstrations.  There are no civic events held at the square during New Year’s Eve yet revellers celebrate into the night, with overcrowding being the main reason the management, Greater London Authority, does not encourage such events.

As a token of support for World War II, Norway always gives a spruce or a fir as London’s Christmas tree which is lit up during Christmas. The occasion of lighting up London’s largest Christmas tree is a colourful and ceremonious event where traditionally the Lord Mayor of Westminster visits Oslo in Norway to take part in the felling of the tree.  The Christmas ceremony has been a historical part of London’s Christmas since 1947.
